Social Media Policy

The use of social media on behalf of AUB and the management of social media accounts developed for AUB should be strictly based on the below policy and general guidelines:

  • Follow applicable AUB policies and procedures:
  • Inform the Office of Communications before creating a social media presence for your department. Seek approval from head of department and communications on platform, content, media, strategy and schedule beforehand.
  • AUB has only one official YouTube Channel. All AUB departments can have their own playlists in that channel. No department can create their own channel.
  • Do not post confidential information pertaining to AUB student, staff or faculty at the risk of disciplinary action or termination.
  • Do not discuss a situation involving named or pictured individuals.
  • You are responsible for what you post, always secure approval from your supervisor before posting or maintain a mutual long term agreement with your supervisor. Notify your supervisor before launching social media presence.
  • Maintain transparency and accuracy.
  • Use a disclaimer (Sample: The American University of Beirut welcomes active participation on the American University of Beirut Official Facebook Page. However, we reserve the right to remove spam or inappropriate posts.).
  • Social media outlets are not intended for spam, scam, hate speech, personal attack, violence or harmful behavior, sexually explicit content, religious issues or politics. Do not post and do delete such related content.
  • Respect copyright and fair use when posting.
  • Obey the Terms of Service of any social media platform employed.
  • Posts on social media sites should protect the university’s institutional voice by remaining professional and respectful in tone and in good taste.
  • If you communicate in the public internet about AUB or AUB-related matters, disclose your connection with AUB and your role at AUB.
  • Don't like another page on Facebook using your page unless it is an AUB department or you have official collaboration going on with that organization. Avoid free advertisement.
  • Follow a 24 hours blackout on social media upon any major instability event in Lebanon or upon the death of a member of the community or a friend to show respect to the feelings of the community.
