What are the application requirements for the CAMES MA program?
Students are required to submit a complete graduate application online. Students should have a GPA of at least 80 or 3.0, excellent recommendations and some academic background in Middle Eastern Studies to be considered for admission in the CAMES MA program. 

What are the course requirements for the thesis track MA program?
Students following the thesis track are required to complete twenty-one credit hours of coursework (seven courses). These seven courses should be: MEST 301 Introduction to Middle Eastern Studies, MEST 300 Making of the Modern Middle East, at least two Arabic language courses (for non-native speakers of Arabic) and three other graduate courses related to Middle Eastern Studies to be selected from CAMES or from other departments at AUB. Up to 9 credits of language instruction will count towards the thesis track MA degree. In addition to the coursework, the student is required to prepare a thesis.

What are the course requirements for the project track MA program?
Students following the project track are required to complete twenty-seven credit hours of coursework (nine courses). These nine courses should be: MEST 301 Introduction to Middle Eastern Studies, MEST 300 Making of the Modern Middle East, at least two Arabic language courses (for non-native speakers of Arabic) and five other graduate courses to be selected from CAMES or from other departments at AUB. Up to 12 credits of language instruction will count towards the project track MA degree. In addition to the coursework, the student is required to prepare a 3 credit project.

How long does it take to complete the MA program?
The MA program in Middle Eastern Studies - both thesis and project track - usually requires at least four semesters (two academic years) to complete.

Can the credits earned in the CAMES Summer Arabic Programs count towards the CAMES MA program requirements?

Students may earn 9 credits of Arabic during the CAMES summer Arabic program which can count towards the Arabic requirement of the CAMES MA program. 

What type of courses are available at the graduate level for students pursuing the CAMES MA degree?
Students may select any graduate course offered at AUB that is related to Middle Eastern Studies. This includes courses in Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Economics, Urban Planning and Arabic. CAMES students may also take one tutorial course which is an individualized program of study with a particular professor.

May students take CAMES courses without applying to the MA program?
It is possible to apply to AUB's Faculty of Arts and Sciences as a visiting student or non-degree student to take courses at AUB. Please check this link for information on how to apply .

What level of English is required for the CAMES Masters program?
Since the language of instruction at AUB is English, CAMES requires of all its students a high level of proficiency in English. Non-native speakers of English who are graduates of universities where the language of instruction is not English will be required to demonstrate their level of English proficiency. Are applicants to the CAMES MA program required to ​know Arabic before applying?

No previous knowledge of Arabic is required of applicants to the MA program. All students in the MA program are required to take at least two Arabic language courses as part of their MA degree.

How much does the CAMES MA program cost?

The MA program in Middle Eastern Studies consists of 30 credits in total. Each graduate credit costs $885 for the 2017-18 academic year. Students who follow the thesis track must complete 21 credits of coursework (7 courses) plus a 9-credit thesis. The coursework costs $18,585 and the thesis registration costs a one-time payment of  $6,374, bringing the total cost of the degree to $24,959. Students who follow the project track must complete 27 credits of coursework (9 credits) plus a 3-credit project (which costs as much as a 3-credit course), bringing the total cost of the degree to $26,550.​ The tuition fees for 2017-18 are listed here. The fees are expected to increase in 2018-19.

What form of financial aid is available through CAMES?
CAMES offers limited funding in the form of graduate assistantships which provide partial coverage of tuition fees or thesis registration. Students who receive graduate assistants are required to work for up to 14 hours a week at CAMES or at other departments on campus. For more information on financial aid, please check the Office of Financial Aid website.
