Welcome to the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Media Studies

The Department of SOAM is a vibrant community of research and learning organized around three scholarly commitments: critical social theory, rigorous methodologies of field inquiry and communication on a range of social and political issues. Reflecting the expertise and intellectual interests of the department’s faculty, its two programs combine various disciplinary approaches in order to cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: the dynamic interplays between local and global transformations; manifestations of gender, ethnic, communal and class inequalities; issues of identity and citizenship caught between primordial forms of belonging and late modern information technologies; emergent social movements and the variously mediated public spheres to address exclusion, human rights, social justice and collective mobilization. In exploring these and other issues, the department gives prominence to contemporary societies of the Mashrek and the larger Middle East in their historical dimension. The degrees SOAM delivers are designed around two inseparable aims: equipping students with cutting-edge, effective skills for an array of professional and academic pursuits, but also with a disposition towards critical thinking, civic participation and self-transformation through intellectual craftsmanship in dialogue with the world they live in. Please enter the sites of our two programs, Sociology-Anthropology and Media Studies, to learn more about our degrees, course offerings and current events.
