  • “As the population grows, the demand in the construction sector increases, more older buildings are torn down to make room for new larger buildings leading to more construction and demolition waste being generated and more raw materials being required, thus more quarries are active. Accordingly, measures need to be taken to control both the quarrying sector in Lebanon and the construction and demolition waste management practices.” Dr. Nadim Farajalla recently co-authored an article entitled “Deriving a Planting Medium from Solid Waste Compost and Excavation and Demolition Rubble” for the peer-reviewed “The Journal of Solid Waste Technology and Management”. • AUB’s Outlook interviewed Dr. Nadim Farajalla on the annual climate change student competition: “The 1st [place] prize is $2,000, the 2nd is $1,500, and the 3rd is $1,000. This goes directly to the students and they could spend it whichever way they like.”
“We expect the winning 3 students to either present their findings at a conference that we will put in here at IFI, or to get our students to go to the climate change negotiation meeting in Warsaw next year. We will fly them there and we would hopefully have a side event dedicated to the topic of climate change and land, so that they can present their work. BLF would fund this travel for the 3 winners.”

  • "Struggles for dignity, social justice and freedom in the Arab world were rebuffed by counter‑revolutions, civil wars, international interventions, sectarianism, Islamist extremism and the retrenchment of authoritarianism. But these harsh violent realities on the ground, combined with the inability of the UN and western powers to mediate or resolve conflicts in the region, have brought some Arabs full circle - and back on to the streets."

  • “Nabaa, as many other places in Beirut and surroundings, represents a mesh of overlapping political, social and sectarian power structures.
