Director of Central Research Science Laboratory

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences seeks a director for the Kamal A. Shair Central Research Science Laboratory ​The facility houses a 500 MHz NMR spectrometer, a scanning electron microscope, a flow cytometer with sorter, HPLC-MS and GC-MS equipment, a fluorescence imaging microscope, a pulsed laser deposition system, X ray diffractometer, and other equipment that serve its science departments and those of other faculties in the University. The laboratory's mission is to serve AUB researchers. 

The director reports to the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The directorship is a non-faculty position extended by renewable, three-year contracts and has no research expectations. 

The director should have appropriate training, a track record, and years of experience with diverse instrumentation. A doctorate in related field and research publications are required. Managerial experience is expected. Exceptionally, an MS holder with equivalent experience will be considered. 

 The director will oversee the routine operation of the laboratory and is assisted by technical staff, with guidance by a steering committee.

Qualifications include: 

  • Deep technical knowledge of and experience with diverse equipment and research applications 
  • Ability to understand user needs
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills with end-users, including faculty, staff, and students 
  • Planning, management, supervisory, and organizational skills 
  • Collegiality 
  • Experience writing grants 
  • Experience in training and helping researchers design experiments 
  • Experience in safety and regulatory compliance 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Managing the purchasing, maintenance, and repair of equipment 
  • Developing and enforcing standard operating protocols 
  • Providing training and support for users 
  • Assisting in the acquisition of equipment, including via external funding agencies 
  • Keeping abreast of advances in instrumentation and researchers' interests
