Call for Proposals 2019

AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs received a generous endowment from the Richard Makdisi family to honor the memory of Nadim A. Makdisi, one of Lebanon’s accomplished journalists and publishers. In addition to hosting an annual lecture by a prominent journalist focusing on current affairs in the Arab world, the Institute is honored to provide the Nadim Makdisi Memorial Fund (NMMF) to support graduate students from AUB.

The NMMF eligibility criteria

  1. The student should be a full-time and active graduate student at AUB.
  2. The student should be engaged in research for their thesis/project or any other graduate research project.
  3. Topic should be on contemporary issues in current affairs or journalism, with relevance to the Middle East. Please note this fund will not provide grants for purely technical or scientific projects.
  4. The student’s thesis or academic advisor should approve the research proposal. This letter/email should be sent to
  5. The student should not have previously received an award from the NMMF.

Grant Application requirements

Students should submit an approximately 1000 word research proposal. This could be based on their prospective thesis or project. Students should not submit the entire thesis proposal, but rather adapt what is relevant for the purposes of this grant. The focus should be on how this grant will enable the student to support the overall research project.

All grant proposals should include the following:
  • Research title.
  • Short introduction on the topic.
  • Brief note on key relevant debates in the literature.
  • Clear and coherent research question that is appropriately supported.
  • Clear and coherent method section, relevant to this grant application.
  • Short statement as to why this research is significant.
  • Short statement on how the Nadim Makdisi grant will be useful in supporting your research. Please note that the question and methods should pertain to what you need specifically form the grant.
  • Rationale for the funds requests and clear, itemized table (ticket, etc.). The grant generally does not fund equipment.

Overall, a key criterion is to show a clear and coherent research project and a convincing statement on how the Fund will achieve your objective. The requested funds should be clearly rationalized for this purpose.

All grant recipients are required to submit the final research of a 2000 word summary of key issues.
Output emerging from the grant to the Issam Fares Institute should have an acknowledgement sentence: This thesis or project (title) was supported by the AUB - Issam Fares Institute Nadim Makdisi Memorial Fund.
An up-to-date CV.

The grant is for a maximum of $2,000 USD for each successful applicant, to be spent on research purposes. Some exceptions can be made for more costly research projects.

Students are required to complete the application form that includes: submitting a budget breakdown, which comprises travel, field work, transportation and other fields. All receipts need to be submitted to the Issam Fares Institute for financial records. Students are also required to submit their CV as mentioned above.

The student’s academic advisor's approval for the topic of research will be required. Interested students should fill out the Application form on the Issam Fares Institute’s website electronically and email it to
Once the grant is approved, the student will submit all the required documents and the first payment will be issued approximately one month after signature of the grant agreement.
Based on the selection and approval process, we will be looking into publishing certain successful submissions as a Nadim Makdisi Memorial Fund publication, digitally.
